It's not like it just needs to download the 345MB patch and then it just magically (no pun intended) applies without doing any patching/work with that data. Whereas a few years ago, Steam didn't tell you this bit of info - it just told you the download size, and then you could sit there with 100% downloaded for a few minutes (or however long, depending on your hardware) with no idea of what it was doing or why it was taking 'this long' to do it.
